Justin Trudeau Says He Will Resign as Canada’s Prime Minister

Justin Trudeau, who has been Canada’s Prime Minister since 2015, has announced that he will resign. He will stay in his role until the Liberal Party chooses a new leader. His resignation will happen on March 24, 2025.

In a speech from his home in Ottawa, Trudeau said, “After talking to my family, I have decided to step down. Canada needs a fresh start with a new leader who can bring new ideas and energy.”

Why is Trudeau Resigning?

Trudeau gave a few reasons for his decision. He said that Canadian politics has become too divided and that Parliament is not working properly. “Parliament has been stuck in fights and is not getting any work done. It’s time to calm things down and bring people together,” he said.

He also said that Canada is facing tough challenges both inside the country and with other nations. He believes that a new leader is needed to handle these challenges.

Meeting with Donald Trump

Before announcing his resignation, Trudeau met with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump at Trump’s Florida home, Mar-a-Lago. They talked about trade because Trump had threatened to put a 25% tax on Canadian imports.

Trump said the meeting was good, but Trudeau warned that Canada would also take strong action if such taxes were imposed. This meeting showed how Trudeau has had to deal with a lot of pressure in managing Canada’s relationship with the U.S., its biggest trading partner.

Trudeau’s Time as Leader

Trudeau became Prime Minister in 2015 and has served three terms. He led Canada during major events like the COVID-19 pandemic, trade challenges, and climate change issues.

Although his popularity has gone down in recent years, Trudeau has made important contributions to Canadian politics. By resigning, he hopes a new leader will make the country stronger and more united.

Now, the Liberal Party will choose a new leader, and Canada looks forward to a fresh start under its next prime minister.
